Cinco de Mayo, St Pete Beach. When I finally left the Hurricane restaurant, Bruce Day, the father of Hurricane man was nursing a Corona and hovering over the last 2 of the 120 free ones on ice. What a perfect day for a race, smooth, clear, sunny and free beer. If only Brian Rimel knew about the free beer.
The answer to Livia's “burning” questions are No and No. NO THREE-PEATs. Rick Walker was beaten by teammate Mark Drennen (both of SYSM). Mike Halfast (SPM) was 3rd place (or the second loser according to our racing expert Peter Lehman) beaten by Andrew Ferral (RAM-NC). However Melissa Varlas (also of SYSM) did repeat in the 2.4 mile. There was a new female winner in the 1000M, and I can't wait to find out whom..............................Lisa Flanagan. Way to go Lisa.

Hman was part of big reunion too, Bill Reed and sons'. Son Adam is currently assigned to SEAL Team FOUR and home this month from his second deployment to Iraq . Son Dan is a fireman/paramedic for the Hillsborough County Fire/Rescue Dept. Bill himself is retired from the Navy in 1994, and graduated with SEAL training class 63. All did the 2.4 miles. Adam won.
Thanks to SYSM for chartering the bus, bringing 30 swimmers, and giving Livia a scare. Livia, thinking swimmers were getting on some unknown tourist tour bus for parts unknown, ran to stop them only to find it was the SYSM team bus. Way to go guys.
Thanks to Christine Forkois for taking time off planning her wedding (Friday the 11th) to come check on her sister and safety walk the beach.
Many thanks to race co-director Livia Zien for another a great job and all the personal sacrifice. She made her “friend” Greg, who's moving to St. Pete, delay his move and stay in Seattle ‘till after the race ‘cause she'd be too busy.
A multitude of tasks is involved in pulling off the race before and during race day. We couldn't have the race if it weren't for our volunteers. Thanks to all our SPM and SPA volunteers, novice and experts: Glenn Stamm and Theunis van der Veen, our perennial Watch Keeper and Time Recorder; our catchers, Bob Aldrich and John Reich; the swimmer card information recorders, Colleen O'Reilly, Alegra Reich, and Lisa Flanagan; Lisa also recruited a number of SPA parents to help at the water table, shuttle swimmers, sell breakfast bracelets. Cheryl Day and Nancy Eaddy have been intimately involved from the race's beginnings and know the routine like the back of their hands. Carolyn Kiper generously volunteered to help out with the computer system. Jay and Rebecca Hansen made certain that we had all our equipment from the pool. Rebecca also commandeered the lifeguard team. Chris Swanson walked the shores keeping constant watch on the swimmers as they made their way south; Dan Nardozzi coordinated our officials and lifeguards for both races, Steve Freeman, Kevin Mooren, and Angela Jones, so our race could be ... well, "official". Our lifeguards were out in the water paddling for over 2 hours, ensuring that all our swimmers would be safe in the water, in addition to our medical team, Barbara Rowland and Rick Wilson making sure that everyone was safe out of the water. Gary Bastie came up with yet another ingenious t-shirt design. Special thanks to Patty and Dan Nardozzi who work tirelessly making sure that all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed.
Thanks to all the participants for coming out, supporting Hurricane man, and being so kind and patient as Livia worked through the computer issues with the results. Your times do look a lot faster when you subtract 2 minutes instead of 2 seconds for your wave.

By the way, Livia and Patty got those last two Coronas.
