Hurricane Man 2008 was a Rough Water Swim
Congratulations and thanks to all those who toughed out this years open water swims. With a rougher than usual chop and unfavorable tide the times were significantly slower this year. Did anybody see Ron "Ralph" Collins amazing finish? Or Tim "I feel violated" Kennedy's finish after towing Bill Specht the distance.
It was surprising how fast the water waves scattered the swimmer waves. But if not for our safety crews, thanks guys, one USMS swimmer would still be on his way to Mexico. Despite conflicting kids meet and
YMCA Masters National Championship,
there were over 300 swimmers for this years Hurricane Man.
The biggest complaint this year was the sand bar running dolphin bottom pushing off down the beach. What can I say you know who you were, this was not a multi sport event although we are thinking about holding a biathlon at Northshore pool if you are interested.
Despite the conditions
Cameron Chambers, 17, and Ashley
Rossi, 16,
proved the kids can go fast even in rough water winning in
49:14 and
52:23. That's just blazing. Who they do that?
Matt Attal, 19, proved once again you are not to slow just to young by aging up from USA to USMS and showing the old guys how to do it winning the 2.4 miler in
53:26. But where o' where do those Orlando masters train for open water? They brought along unattached
Kristin
Rygg and took 3 out of 4 of the USMS first place towels home to Orlando. Kristin
Rygg won the 2.4 women in
57:29. While
Ryan Hall (16:05) and
John Schrantz (15:42) each won their 1000m. Way to go Orlando. Their batting average is almost as good our Devil Rays this spring.

For those who don't know anything about Hurricane Man. There are two races: Pass-a-Grille (1000 yards) and Hurricane Man (2.4 miles). ENTRY FEE: MUST BE POSTMARKED by April 30, 2008; $30 for USA/USMS registered, $45 for unregistered swimmers over age 18. Make checks payable to St. Pete Masters. Map to Packet pick up and finish line. Satellite Race Map from Google Earth.
The Hurricane man race starts at the county park at 4700 Gulf BLVD and finishes at 8th Ave and Gulf Way, St Pete Beach across the street from the hurricane restaurant. The 2.4 mile race starts at 7:30 am with 3 waves two minutes apart: all USA swimmers, Men USMS, and Women USMS. The race course is closed at 9:30 am.
Race packet pick up is at the finish line day of race. There is NO RACE DAY ENTRY. Don't even think about it. Rides will be available for swimmers to the 2.4 mile start. Most 1000 yd swimmers walk to the start. You must stay within the "no boat buoys". Lifeguards will turn you toward shore if you wander outside these buoys.
Post race events will be at the Hurricane restaurant immediately after the race. Awards with be given as soon as possible after the race.
The first Hurricane man race was in 1996. Do to some hurricane issues it was moved to the spring before hurricane season. Stories of recent past events and results are available below. Be sure to check out the Aerial Photo of the 2005 race start.
