WEATHER DOES NOT AFFECT WINNING WAYS !
Despite dealing with a variety of weather conditions, incredible winds, rain, lightning and thunder, St. Pete Masters was again victorious at the St. Pete Masters 39th Annual Short Course Yards Championship Meet! With a combined team score of 2,341.50 points we were able to overcome the Florida Aquatic Combined Team (FACT) and a very deep Sarasota YMCA Sharks Masters (SYSM) for a convincing win. Thanks to all of our team members that participated either by swimming or working the meet. The compliments I have received from the visiting participants have been many and much appreciated, so give yourselves a pat on the back for making this meet another great success.
Now, on to the good stuff….
In his usual understated fashion, Bill Specht, has once again impressed. Aging up last year into the 50-54 age-group, we should be looking for national records on his behalf, and, low and behold, two of them from our meet! Bill broke the national records in both the 200 Fly (2:00.02) and the 50 Back (26.16). Congratulations, Bill! On the women’s side, leading our team with a total of 99 points (the most that you can earn), was Charlotte Petersen. Swimming in the 40-44 age-group, Charlotte was high point winner by winning all of her 11 events. Other first place high point winners were: Jessica Weinberg and Sean Esterly (18-24); Kristen Nardozzi and Ted Bradley (25-29); Tim Kennedy (50-54); Fred Lewis (55-59) and Sandy Steer (65-69). Second place high point towels were awarded to the following: Sarah Swoch (18-24); Paula Texel (35-39); Ron Collins (45-49); JoAnn Harrelson (50-54); Bill Specht (50-54). Third place high point were awarded to: Jessie Bardin (18-24); Eric Herman (35-39); Sharon Steinmann (50-54); and Paul Scoville (50-54).
SPM had quite a few swimmers that were swimming for us for the first time. Eckerd College students, Alina Dallmeier and Sarah Levine competed in the 18-24 age-group and did quite well. Brand new members, Anthony Drain (40-44) and Daniel Fluet (35-39), just joined the team along with their meet entries and were both big help on our relays. Our 813 boys from Tampa, Keith Henthorne (competing in his first swim meet ever) in the 50-54 age-group and Rob Tullman (45-49), both had some great swims this past weekend and were a big help on relays. It is always great to see some of our triathletes join us for the pool meets and Keith Nelson and Dan McClenathan both had very nice 1650 swims. A big welcome back to Melissa Dipple and “Papa” John Galloway as they re-debuted with SPM this past weekend!
More than a few of us noticed that this was a very competitive and fast meet, and SPM was a big part of that. Many, many personal bests were recorded by our previously mentioned swimmers and the following: Vancy Eaddy (50 Free), Steve Freeman (400 IM), Nick Lang (100 Breast), Pat Marzulli (1650 Free), Samantha Mooren (50 Back, 50 Breast, 200 Breast), and Flavia Zappa (50 Back).
Last, but certainly not least, a big thanks to our volunteers. T-shirt design Jessie Parker. Officials, Dan Nardozzi, Kevin Mooren, Charlie Kohnken, Mike Halfast, Woody McDaniel, Kim Stoddard, Angela Jones and Joanne Gauzens kept the meet running at a great pace all weekend long. Chris Burke and Christine Kirchner did a great job announcing and kept those raffle sales booming with their very special “incentive gifts”. Marie Torsney and Marge Kohnken did a fabulous job of managing the eight raffle baskets and sales over the weekend, and a very special thanks to Bruce Day and Sarah Swoch for obtaining and creating the raffle items. SPMer’s that helped with timing or awards table were: Jim Davis, Dawn Clark, Bruce Day, Stephanie Mischke, Vance Eaddy, Joe Hughey, Mike Torsney, Katy Kline, Dave McCord, Lenore Rupert, Regina Morrissey, Lisa Ross, Sue Hotz, David Larson, Harold Ferris, Stephanie Lee, Theun van der Veen, and Robert Chamberlin. Special thanks to Sandy Steer and Kern Davis for their help with the social that was held on Saturday evening. As always, we cannot do this meet without significant help from St. Petersburg Aquatics and so, thanks to the following: Allie Evans, Abby King, Ellie Petrillo, Gaby Lopez, Kimberly Brown, Olivier Gilbert, Joshua Chen, Georgi Krastev, Hristina Krasteva, Carol and Keith Coleman, Sidney Newfield, Melanie Rorer, Sean Kendrick, Casey Kracht, Colleen Quinn, the Piper and Green families. Thanks to Lisa Flanagan for managing the hospitality and concessions all weekend too!
All in all, a fun and exciting weekend for all. Let’s start getting ready for Hurricane Man on May 9th and our Long Course Meet July 11-12!

2009 Hurricane Man Entry Form
Who Is That Funny Man in the Boots
Jan 2009 the last days for the 2009 Hour Swim and St. Pete Masters came through big time! We had 80 swimmers complete the event over the month (I think half of you did it the last three days of this week!) and my preliminary calculations (missing one person's yardage) puts us at about 314,300 yard for our team! This should give us a great team finish in this year's results.
I will be working on relays this week and will do my best to get as many in the Top Ten as possible. If any of you are interested in submitting your 1650 split for the Jon Steiner Memorial Mile event, please let me know so I can get you a copy of your split sheet and entry form. You will need to mail this in on your own with the separate entry fee.
Since we have some momentum going to start off the new year, please consider entering the SUN Masters Valentine Meet, February 14-15, at the Long Center in Clearwater . Entries are due by Friday, February 6th and you should mail these in yourself. Entry forms are located in the front of the cashier office at the pool or from me. This is a great tune-up meet for our very own SPM meet on March 27-29 which I expect record numbers of members to enter!
Again, thank you for being a part of your team. We have a great group of people that train and socialize together, but from a coaching standpoint, it is very gratifying to see so many of you compete together. A special thanks to Charlotte for nagging so many to participate and then being there to count for them too. Keep working hard and get ready for your next event.... Patty

Summer Long Course Meet
July 12- 13. They don't call it LONG course for nothing. Bet you could use Darra Torres health team after that one. I sure am going to be sore.
The weather was as they say, “for the ducks” but it worked perfectly for this meet. Overcast cool, occasional drizzle to keep you cool, and that 4 am early morning downpour to cool the pool down…. perfect. Didn't need the sunscreen or gatorade all weekend.
Bumpy Jones sets another record age group. So what else is new? However the quote of the meet wasn't after his record setting swim but but after the one where he didn't set the record. “Don't know how I didn't beat that guy's record. He was so old.”
Congratulations to our many SPM high point winners! Taking home the coveted first place towels were: Ted Bradley (25-29); Eric Herman (35-39); Kern Davis (50-54); and Charlie Kohnken (75-79). Second place key chains were won by: Carmen Adams and Brent Sunnucks (18-24); Jim Montante (25-29); Paul Scoville (45-49); Jo Ann Harrelson (50-54); John Cox (70-74). Overall third place went to: Jessie Bardin (18-24).
Speaking of Jessie Bardin – congratulations are in order for breaking the Florida LMSC 18-24 age group 200 Free record with a fast 2:10.15 and for anchoring the record-setting 72+ 200 Free Relay (2:08.94) with Sara Cantu, Alisha Adams and Carmen Adams. More Florida LMSC records were broken on the men's side with Ted Bradley (25-29) going 2:02.63 in the 200 Free and 2:15.18 in the 200 Individual Medley. Not to be outdone by the younger crowd, Bill Specht, in the 50-54 age group, took down the 50 Fly record with a 27.91 and the 200 Fly record with a 2:21.85. Bill might have been pushed just a little bit in that 200 by Brent Sunnucks, who somehow managed to bust out a 2:19.57 with no real training over the summer (unless we consider teaching swim lessons every day training!)
Rick Walker, Sarasota Y Sharks Masters coach, wants to know where we got all the “young kids” from and was quite jealous of the turnout in the 18-24 and 25-29 age groups for our team so….thanks kids for showing up and making other teams take notice. We had some fabulous swims out of those age groups as mentioned above, but others need to be mentioned. On the women's side we enjoyed having sisters, Carmen and Alisha Adams compete with us for the first time. Both girls swim at St. Leo College during the school year. As mentioned earlier, Jessie Bardin is a great addition to the team and she swims at University of Tampa during the school year. Sarah Swoch and Samantha Mooren were back for more competition fun and Sarah commented on how much the consistent swimming paid off with some great time drops. We welcomed Regina Macolino and Sara Cantu back to competition with this meet and they both had solid swims. On the young guys side it was good to see Jim Montante and Jeff Swisher (25-29) back racing again, after competing together at St. Pete High back in the day.
In the 35+ age groups, it was nice to have our regulars: Eric Herman (had another great meet!), Jo Ann Harrelson, Sharon Steinmann, Kern Davis, Bill Specht, Nick Lang, Storm Eddy, Gary Bastie, Jim Stine, Jim Davis, Theun van der Veen, John Cox, Charlie Kohnken, Bob Beach, Harold Ferris, Ralph Coxhead and Bob Atwood (yes, Bob I saved the best for last). We did have some new swimmers, Dawn Clark and Paul Scoville, who both had excellent swims in their events and were a big help on relays. And lastly, cannot go without mentioning how sweet Tim Kennedy was to sign up for the 1500, after just completing the 28.5-mile swim around Manhattan , to support girlfriend Carolyn Kiper in her first pool meet. Oh yes, and then let her beat him too!
As always, we cannot host the meet without volunteer help and a BIG thank you to the following: Officials – Charlotte Petersen, Steve Freeman, Mike Halfast, Kevin Mooren, Woody McDaniel, Peter Bardin, Joe and Jeanne Finke, Angela Jones and Dan Nardozzi; SPM helpers – John Reich, Grace Austin, Bob Aldrich, Howard Brown, Gary Bastie, Marie Camoes, Vance Eaddy, Robert Chamberlin, Chris Swanson, Vicki Quail; SPA helpers – Rob and Laura Krall, Georgi Krastev, Hristina Krasteva, Alex Grant, Bobby, Summer and Autumn Finke, Dan Tripp and Kira Linde. Very special thanks go to Alegra Reich for being the “right-hand” person all weekend, Bruce Day for timing and getting all those fun mystery heat awards, Kern Davis and Paul Scoville for taking pictures, and to Aaron Peter for the fabulous job announcing all weekend.
Next up on the FUN swim meet agenda: Non-sanctioned “high school format” intra-squad meet on October 19th and SYSM/SPM Short Course Meters Bridge the Bay Meet on November 16th and 23rd.

38 th Annual Short Course Championship Meet
March 28-30. What a great weekend! With a well-designed meet t-shirt, Chamber of Commerce weather, a new scoreboard, fast swimming and tons of volunteers, this year's “Flock to the Blocks” 38 th Annual Short Course Yards Championship Meet was a rousing success. St. Pete Masters had one of our best turn-outs ever with 52 swimmers entering the meet and contributing to our combined team score total of 2,058 points (Sarasota Y was second with 762 points)! Of course, a big portion of these points is from the relays and a big round of applause to my Saturday swimmers – Coach PattyI did not have to change or cancel one single relay that day. Thanks to all of you for showing up and being there to support this team effort!
St. Pete Masters was quite successful individually as well. Congratulations to the following swimmers were recognized with our coveted high point towel awards:
| 1 st Place | 2 nd Place | 3 rd Place | |
| John Doolittle (35-39) | Genoa Fedyszyn (25-29) | Sarah Swoch (18-24) | |
| Charlotte Petersen (40-44) | Eric Herman (35-39) | Chris Swanson (45-49) | |
| Judy Humbarger (55-59) | Ron Collins (45-49) | Bill Specht (45-49) | |
| Tim Kennedy (50-54) | Pam Geiger (50-54) | ||
| Jo Ann Harrelson (50-54) | Gary Bastie (55-59) | ||
| Sandy Steer (65-69) | Peter Betzer (65-69) | ||
| John Cox (70-74) | |||
| Bob Beach (75-59) | |||
Of course, the high point award is not the only reason our team shows up to swim at this meet. Some enter to see how the training is paying off, some for fun, some because I bully them into it and then some to set records. Once again, Ted Bradley (18-24), shows us how, with very little training and a ton of talent, you can set a new Florida and Dixie Zone record in the 200 backstroke (1:56.54). Charlotte Petersen (40-44) set a new Dixie Zone and Florida record in the 1650 Free by going 18:34.87. Diane Williams (65-69) broke the Florida 50 Free record with a very fast 32.89. Last, but certainly not least, Judy Humbarger (55-59) had an unbelievable meet. She set new standards for Florida in the 100 Back (1:13.72), 200 IM (2:42.03) and 500 Free (6:30.67) and broke the Florida and Dixie Zone records in the 50 Back (33:86), 400 IM (5:51.39), 100 Fly (1:11.33) and 50 Fly (31.65). Congratulations to these four swimmers on their accomplishments!
It was great to see Chris Burke back competing and congratulations to Genoa Fedyszyn, Jackie Smith and Nick Lang on their first meets with us. Looks like quite a number of our swimmers had some personal bests: Bruce Day was 5 for 5; Storm Eddy dropped 7.17 in the 200 Back; Eric Herman in the 200 Free, Fred Lewis, 100 Back; Jerry Little dropped 4.47 in 100 Breast; Pat Marzulli, 1650 Free, Jill St. Louis in both of her events, and Flavia Zappa dropped 2.55 in her 1000 split on the 1650 Free. In the “I'm not getting older – I'm getting better category”, Alex Ramirez-Miller (80-84) managed to drop a whopping 3 minutes and 12 seconds off of his 1650 Free. The team really got a kick out of Laura Albee, showing up with the three kids in the stroller and no warm-up at all, swimming personal bests in the 50 Breast, 100 Free and 50 Fly. The kids were happy because they got mom's medals to wear on the ride home – and no, Laura did not get to warm-down either! Finally, many of us noted Charlotte's great job of cheering on her teammates, particularly getting everyone up to cheer on Phyllis Mathiot (85 years young), in her 50 Back and 50 Free. Thanks Charlotte and way to go Phyllis on those two 2 nd place finishes.
Sunday morning was fun as Fred kept pulling items out of the weight room (Speedo sandals, packages of hot sauce, who knows what else…) to inspire people to buy raffle tickets. If you bought $15.00 worth of raffle tickets you got a free pair of sandals! The sales really picked up after that and we were able to donate $266.00 to SPA's inner-city pool program. Thanks to all that purchased tickets and congratulations to Gary Bastie and Marie Torsney (she was one of the “raffle ladies”) that won from our team.
Did I mention we had a ton of volunteers? SPMer's turned out in force a we cannot thank all of you enough. The meet ran so smoothly and the compliments rolled in from attendees, but it is all due to all of you that helped out. Once again, Fred came through with his SPA swimmers (many of them on their first day of spring break!) volunteering all weekend. Of course, they may have been more willing since he was competing in the meet and they really enjoy critiquing his swims. So, without further ado, thanks to the following:

A big thank you to our officials: Dan Nardozzi, Kevin Mooren, Joanne Gauzens, Woody McDaniel, Angela Jones, Kim Stoddard, Steve Freeman and Mike Halfast. Many of you do not realize the amount of extra time and effort that goes into being a certified official. They must be re-certified every two years and work a required number of meets each year to be able to volunteer their time for you.
And thanks to our coaches. The times were as red hot as the scoreboard numbers. And those red hot numbers were the SPM women, including Coach Patty, in their blue and red suits. She showed it off in the 400IM. Not to be out done Coach Fred also showed his stuff in the 400IM.
Let's keep the momentum going – set your goals for Hurricane Man on May 10 th and/or our Long Course Meters Championship Meet July 12-13. We look forward to seeing all of you there!

SCM Meet
Nov. 18 / SCM: Bridge the Bay Meet -- Day 2. St. Petersburg FL.
It was a beautiful day but Ted Bradley didn't seem to be enjoying himself. Why was he nervous as a cat. He was stretching, pacing the deck, shaking his arms out and taking a load of grief from Bill Specht. Did anybody else notice how nevous Teddy was before he swam? Why became clear when he broke the Men's 18-24 age group National Record for the 200 SCM Backstroke going 2:08.69. It was essentially a solo swim without any competition. Hey none of us can go 2:08 for 200 Back.
Thanks to everybidy for their help in running the meet especially our coach Patty: officials; Dan Nardozzi, Steve Freeman, Charlie Kohnken, Kim Stoddard, and Kevin Mooren:
volunteers; Kurt Steinmann, Leslie Treat, Bruce Day, Lisa Plescia, Konrad Euler, Monica Martinez, Dave McCord, Harold Ferris, Theun van der Veen, Katie Knight-Perry, Ned Allen, John Cox, Joe Baker, Christine Swanson, Tom Smith, Christine Kirchner, Sandy Steer, and Chris Burke. Welcome back to the pool Chris.
